His performances are a mix of stories, fiddle and pipe tunes from traditional sources around the world. The sounds of Galician, Irish, Slovakian, French or Scottish pipes often punctuate his shows.
Kevin has taught at Festival of American fiddle tunes, Alsadair Fraser’s Sierra fiddle camp, Puget Sound Guitar workshop, and a host of other music camps across the country, and performed in concerts and at dances in Europe, Canada and the USA for thirty years, both solo and with The Hillbillies from Mars ( eclectic trad), Les Tetes de Violon ( quebecois ), Wake the Dead ( Celtic Grateful Dead), and with Men of Worth’s Celtic Christmas. He also currently plays with the Family Carr, which includes his wife Josie Mendelsohn, and son and daughter, Daniel and Molly Carr.
Kevin Carr: Bio
I tell stories and play traditional folk instruments. From the Fillmore West to the Oregon Country Fair, from the former Soviet Union to Galicia, Spain, and from Alaska to Mexico, I’ve travelled to play with and learn from traditional musicians, to gather stories to share, and to connect with folks through the ecstatic medium of music. I do solo shows such as ” The Other Pipes – exotic and little known Bagpiping traditions of the World”, “Stories from the Musical Realms – Inspiration and the Music Between the Notes”, and “Fiddle Fables – Stories by and about Fiddlers and Fiddling, with tunes appropriate and appropriated “.
I Play with various groups: Wake the Dead – Intergalactic Roots Music ( formerly, the world’s only all star grateful dead celtic jam band) www.wakethedead.org
Hillbillies from Mars – traditional dance music from Mars, Appalachia, Ireland, Scotland, Galicia and points East, South, West and North. www.hillbilliesfrommars.com
Les Tetes de Violon – Quebecois ( french canadian) fiddle music in a folk chamber ensemble. www.trentesouszero.com
Winter’s Carol, with the Men of Worth – Holiday Shows in the Gaelic spirit. www.menofworth.com
Verdegaio – I play with Alexandre Cadarso and Javier Blanco from Galicia whenever we are on the same continent. Galician music with pipes, accordion, fiddle and mandolin. www.nsaio.org/verdegaio.
I GIVE FIDDLE WORKSHOPS on various styles of dance music – Irish, Galician, Quebecois, Old time. I have been on the faculty as fiddle instructor at the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes in Port Townsend , Washington several times, and have been coordinator of the tutorial program there for years. I have been on the faculty as fiddle teacher at Alasdair Fraser’s Sierra fiddle camp, at Lark Camp in Mendocino, and I have been camp instrumentalist at Puget Sound Guitar workshop, and California Coast Music Camp. I’ve played for dances, told stories and given fiddle workshops at many dozens of dance camps, family camps, and music camps and festivals across the country and in Canada and Spain.
MY SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS are informative and meet criteria for English arts education, as well as history of music. Kids of all ages love them, as do teachers.

Golden Bough will Heat up Tualatin with Celtic Fire at the monthly 2nd Saturday Community Celtic Concert
www.goldenboughmusic.com
What: Golden Bough, world touring Festival Band in Concert here in Tualatin
Where: Winona Grange 8340 SW Seneca St, Tualatin, 97062
When: 7:30pm, Saturday, April 14, 2012 doors 6:45
Cost & tickets: $20, $25 at door. Tickets at the Celtic Corner (503)287-3009 or on-line at https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/223521. (Tickets at door that evening are cash or checks only)
The Celtic music of Ireland and Scotland has continued to increase in popularity for the past several years. One of the groups spearheading this popularity is the international touring and recording group Golden Bough. Besides the music of the better known Celtic countries of Ireland and Scotland, Golden Bough will also perform music from the lesser known nations of Wales, Cornwall, The Isle of Man, French Brittany and Galicia in Spain. The concert will be held at the Winona Grange.
Since 1980 Margie Butler and Paul Espinoza (co-founders of Golden Bough) have recorded and performed the music of the Celtic lands, along with their own compositions. Last year they spent time in Galicia in Spain to research the Celtic music of that province. For their Forks performance Golden Bough will perform pieces from Galicia, as well as music from the other Celtic lands.
The newest addition to Golden Bough’s line-up is violinist Kathy Sierra, whose vibrant energy, exquisite fiddling and dulcet vocals compliment the singing and playing styles of Butler and Espinoza. Sierra began her violin studies at age 5 in Hawaii and made her debut with the Honolulu Symphony at age 7. She earned her BA degree in Drama with an emphasis on music from Principia College in Elsah, Illinois. Upon graduation, Sierra was presented with the College’s Francis Van Der Meid Smith Music Award for outstanding musicianship. She brings a passionate approach to the group’s music and a fresh dynamic to their stage performance.
For more than thirty years, Golden Bough has brought their music to enthusiastic fans throughout the United States and Europe, as well as Japan. Their interpretation of this music has made them a favorite with audiences on both sides of the Atlantic, gaining critical acclaim and enthusiastic support from folk fans wherever they perform.
The music of Galicia is the latest to be added to Golden Bough’s ever-growing Celtic repertoire. Galicia is one of the few areas in Continental Europe that has been able to maintain its Celtic culture. With melodies similar to Irish and Scottish music, the Galician music also incorporates the rhythms of Spain, giving it an exceptional flavor of its own. With a dazzling array of acoustic instruments and haunting vocal styling, this trio of modern day minstrels presents a program that leaves little room for audience members to lose interest. Blending their voices in three-part harmony they sing ballads, lively sing-alongs and beautiful acapella pieces and back themselves with the Celtic harp, guitar, penny-whistle, recorder, violin, viola, octave-mandolin, accordion, and bodhran (the Irish hand drum).
The Celtic nations share a long history of culture and fine arts and their music often intertwines to create the powerfully emotional sound of what we now call Celtic music. Golden Bough was founded with the concept of combining this music with various folk styles, highlighting their own compositions. For the past two decades, long before the current craze caught on, Golden Bough has been delighting audiences with their exceptional interpretations of the music of the Celtic nations.
In the recording studio, as well as on stage, Golden Bough captures the essence and joy of traditional folk music and captivates audiences with the uniqueness of their original compositions. The music of Golden Bough is enjoyed by listeners of all ages and you’ll be hard put to sit still once the fire of the Celtic music is flamed by these fine musicians. A splendid time is guaranteed for all!

April 6th-National Tartan Day Event at Paddy’s Pub
by Linda MacDonald-Lewis on Mar.26, 2012, under Uncategorized
Each year in America, Scots and friends of Scotland gather to celebrate Nat’l Tartan Day.
The date of April 6th is based on the date in 1320 when the Declaration of Arbroath was sent to the Pope in Avignon, France. King Robert the Bruce and 45 Barons set their seals to this document. Widely believed to be composed by Bernard de Linton, declaring the sovereign right for Scots to live in freedom as a separate nation from their neighbors below the border, the English.
This document went on to have a vast influence on the later writings of men like George Buchanan (The Renaissance Man, of Stirlingshire, Scotland), John Locke and Thomas Paine. And in turn had a very important influence on writing of the Declaration of Independence.
The government of the United States saw this and passed a resolution to set this date aside in celebration; to honour the people of Scotland and this document’s help in bringing democratic ideals to the modern world.
As was held last year…once again
Paddy’s Pub in Portland Oregon will be holding a celebration for Nat’l Tartan Day.
Friday April 6th starting at 8pm.
From what I heard about last year…this is one you won’t want to miss!
